Abstract
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, as one of Victor Hugo's seminal works, has drawn extensive scholarly attention for its profound exploration of human nature and intricate social context. This study focuses on the character of Esmeralda, employing a methodology that combines close reading with aesthetic analysis to examine the process of the destruction of beauty as embodied by her character and its associated socio-cultural significance. The research aims to demonstrate how Esmeralda transcends a mere symbol of beauty to become a profound me taphor for religious oppression, social prejudice, and individual tragic fate. Through a systematic examination of the novel’s plot, interpersonal dynamics, and narrative techniques, it is revealed that Esmeralda’s beauty is not solely manifested in her physical appearance but is deeply embedded in her spiritual qualities of kindness, freedom, and resilience. However, this embodiment of beauty is ultimately destroyed due to the distortions of the societal environment, thereby highlighting the work’s critical reflection on the contradictions between human nature and society. Innovatively integrating aesthetic theory with socio-historical contexts, this study deepens the understanding of Hugo’s creative ideology and provides fresh perspectives and theoretical underpinnings for related literary research.*Key words:Esmeralda; Destruction Of Beauty; Social Criticism; Religious Oppression; Hugo's Creative Thought
