Abstract
La Dame aux Camélias, a significant work of 19th-century French literature, profoundly reflects the moral values and class contradictions of the time. This study focuses on the character of Marguerite Gautier, exploring the social origins of her tragic love story to reveal the complex relationship between individual fate and social environment. By employing a research methodology that combines close textual reading with socio-historical criticism, the paper analyzes Marguerite's existential predicament under multiple pressures, including class disparity, economic oppression, and gender discrimination, arguing that her tragedy is not merely a result of personal choices but also an inevitable manifestation of social structural inequality. The findings indicate that Marguerite's tragic love story mirrors the societal suppression of women's independent identities during this period, as well as the constraining effects of moral norms on individual freedom. A key contribution of this study lies in its examination of the character within a broader socio-cultural context, emphasizing the profound impact of social stratification and gender power imbalances on women's destinies.
