Abstract
  Pride and Prejudice, as a classic work by Jane Austen, vividly portrays the social landscape of the British gentry class and the status of women from the late 18th to the early 19th century. This study focuses on the character of Lydia, examining her frivolous and ignorant personality traits and the underlying socio-cultural causes, with the aim of revealing the survival challenges faced by women during this period under social oppression and educational deprivation. By employing a research methodology that combines close reading of the text with social-historical criticism, this paper analyzes the deeper motivations behind Lydia's behavior and its impact on both her family and society, situating her actions within the historical context of the time. The findings indicate that Lydia's frivolity and ignorance are not merely indicative of personal flaws but also reflect the lack of resources for women to develop independent personalities and the scarcity of educational opportunities in that era. This conclusion transcends the traditional interpretation that solely offers a negative evaluation of Lydia, instead emphasizing the role of social structures in shaping individual behavior. The primary contribution of this study lies in its approach of analyzing a micro-level character to uncover the profound influence of macro-level social mechanisms on women's destinies, thereby providing a new perspective for understanding female literary figures in 19th-century British literature.
