Abstract
"Great Expectations," as a classic novel by Charles Dickens, profoundly reflects the gender ideologies and class contradictions of 19th-century British society through its character portrayals. This study focuses on the central female character, Estella, examining her passive situation and struggles within the text to reveal the social status and psychological state of women in the Victorian era. By employing a research methodology that combines close reading with feminist criticism, this paper analyzes Estella's complex circumstances in familial, romantic, and social relationships, revealing that her actions and fate are deeply influenced by the patriarchal social structure while also demonstrating her limited awareness of resistance against her own destiny. The findings indicate that Estella's character not only embodies the passivity of women in traditional society but also implicitly conveys a potential demand for gender equality. The innovation of this study lies in situating Estella's individual experiences within a broader socio-cultural context, thereby deepening the understanding of her character and providing a new perspective for re-evaluating gender issues in Dickens's works. Ultimately, the conclusion underscores the significant value of literary works in reflecting and critiquing societal gender inequalities.Key words:Esther; Gender Concept; Patriarchy; Victorian Era; Feminist Criticism
