Abstract

The prosperity of Ming Dynasty novels was closely related to commercial operations, with the rise of urban culture providing a broad social foundation and market demand for novel creation. This study aims to explore the commercial operation model of Ming Dynasty novels and its impact on urban culture, systematically examining the development trajectory of the bookshop industry through methods such as literature analysis and historical verification. It dissects the complete industrial chain from topic planning, editing, and publishing to distribution and sales. The findings indicate that bookshop owners in the Ming Dynasty not only focused on economic benefits but also emphasized the combination of content innovation and reader demand, forming a novel creation style characterized by accessibility and intricate plots. Moreover, novels extensively reflected daily urban life, family ethics, and commercial activities, becoming an essential component of the spiritual life of the urban class. This research introduces a commercial operation perspective into the study of Ming Dynasty novels for the first time, revealing the critical role of the bookshop industry in promoting the popularization of literature and proposing the innovative concept of "commercially-driven literary production," which provides new insights into understanding the development patterns of ancient Chinese literature. Through in-depth analysis of representative works and publication cases, this study demonstrates the mutually reinforcing relationship between commercial operations and literary creation, concluding that Ming Dynasty novels were not merely a literary phenomenon but also an inevitable product of socio-economic development, thereby enriching the research dimensions of Chinese literary history.
