Abstract

"As one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, Journey to the West is rich in allegorical significance. From a historical perspective, it was written during the Ming Dynasty, a period marked by vibrant social thought, and reflects various social phenomena and spiritual aspirations of the time. This study aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the allegorical nature of Journey to the West and its influence on literary history, offering new insights into the understanding of ancient Chinese literature. By employing methods such as close reading and comparative analysis, this research interprets the character portrayals and narrative structures within the text. The findings reveal that the pilgrimage of the four disciples symbolizes humanity's ongoing struggle to overcome personal weaknesses and pursue truth, while the myriad demons and monsters represent various human vices. The work has had a profound impact on literary history, not only pioneering the genre of supernatural fiction but also setting precedents for future literary creation through its unique narrative structure and imaginative storytelling. A key innovation of this study lies in examining the allegorical significance of Journey to the West within a broader socio-cultural context, revealing that the work is not merely a collection of mythological tales but also a profound reflection on human nature and society. This contributes to a reevaluation of the novel’s place in Chinese literary history and provides valuable lessons for contemporary literary creation in terms of how to inherit and develop classical traditions."
