Abstract
As a representative work of the satirical novels of the Qing Dynasty, the Scholars deeply reflects the various ills of the society at that time. The purpose of this study is to explore the critical consciousness in The Scholars, and reveal the author Wu Jingzi's sharp criticism of the imperial examination system, scholar atmosphere and social ethics through the combination of text reading and historical context analysis. It is found that The Scholars not only reveals the spiritual alienation and moral decline of the scholars in the imperial examination system, but also shows the author's thinking on the ideal personality and social order through the depiction of different types of characters. This paper innovatively puts the Scholars under the background of the social transformation of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, examines the historical root and practical significance of its critical consciousness, and points out that the work is not only a simple desc ription of the social phenomenon at that time, but also a reflection and reconstruction of the traditional Confucian ideal. Through the analysis of the specific characters in the text, this paper further reveals the author's profound insight into the complexity of human nature and the expectation of social change.
