Abstract：As MAO Dun's representative work, Midnight has become an important work in the history of modern Chinese literature with its profound social insight and human nature analysis. The novel is set in the era of social change, and through the delicate desc ription of social class changes, economic development trends and social conflicts, it shows the true face of people's lives in that era. In such a complex and changeable social background, the test of human nature is particularly severe. In Midnight, MAO Dun successfully portrays many vivid and complex characters who have experienced a series of tests, from psychological changes to moral choices, to value conflicts and choices between survival and dignity, in the torrent of social change. Their psychological states, behavior choices and fate trends not only reflect the profound impact of social change on human nature, but also show the complexity and diversity of human nature in social change. This work deeply reveals the interwoven relationship between social change and human nature test, showing how human nature affects and promotes social change, and how social change further tests human nature. Through Midnight, we can not only know and understand the complexity of human nature more deeply, but also draw inspiration and warning for contemporary society, and trigger us to think deeply about human nature, society and literature.
