Abstract

  Family-owned enterprises, as significant economic entities worldwide, play an indispensable role in promoting economic growth and creating employment; however, their succession issues have long constrained the sustainable development of these businesses. This study focuses on succession planning and governance structure optimization within family firms, exploring how scientifically designed succession mechanisms and rational adjustments to governance structures can enhance intergenerational continuity. By employing a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative and quantitative analyses, this research delves into common sources of conflict and governance challenges during the succession process through case studies of typical domestic and international family firms, complemented by statistical modeling of questionnaire survey data. The findings indicate that effective succession planning necessitates the integration of family values, corporate strategic ob jectives, and institutionalized management practices. Furthermore, optimizing governance structures hinges on clearly defining the boundaries between family and managerial responsibilities while incorporating external independent directors to improve decision-making transparency and professionalism. A key innovation of this study lies in the construction of an integrated fr amework that incorporates both succession planning and governance structure optimization into a unified analytical system, offering systematic practical guidance for family-owned enterprises. Additionally, the research highlights the critical role of cultural factors in the succession process, emphasizing the uniqueness of family firm governance within localized contexts, thereby enriching relevant theoretical fr ameworks and providing valuable references for policymakers.
