Abstract:This paper aims to explore the phenomenon of pragmatic presupposition in English news headlines and its effects. Firstly, the research background and purpose are reviewed, and the current research situation at home and abroad is analyzed. Then it gives an overview of the theory of pragmatic presupposition, including its definition, classification, functions and characteristics. Next, we study in detail the phenomenon of pragmatic presupposition in English news headlines, including lexical presupposition, syntactic presupposition and contextual presupposition. The role of pragmatic presupposition in improving title readability, enhancing accuracy and promoting cross-cultural communication is further analyzed. It also discusses the challenges of pragmatic presuppositions in English news headlines, including polysemy, cultural differences, and the balance between conciseness and accuracy. Finally, optimization strategies are proposed, including rational use of lexical presupposition, innovative syntactic presupposition and emphasis on contextual presupposition. Through these strategies, we can improve the accuracy and diversity of title ex pression, enrich the structure and form of title, and enhance the information content and depth of title. The results of this study have some guiding significance for the writing and reading of English news headlines.
