Abstract
"Notre-Dame de Paris," as Victor Hugo's masterpiece, portrays a multitude of vivid character images, among which the role of Quasimodo embodies profound humanistic connotations. This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of Quasimodo’s character image and the beauty of humanity within him, thereby revealing the humanitarian value embedded in the work. Through meticulous interpretation of the novel's text combined with socio-historical background analysis, it is found that despite his grotesque appearance, Quasimodo possesses admirable qualities such as kindness and loyalty. His affection towards Esmeralda is pure, and he bravely comes to her aid when she faces danger, actions that transcend the discrimination and oppression he has endured. The findings indicate that Quasimodo’s character serves as a critical representation of Hugo's condemnation of the dark aspects of society at that time and also as an ode to the beauty of humanity. The novelty of this research lies in re-examining Quasimodo from the perspective of human nature, uncovering the overlooked virtues within him, thus providing a new angle for understanding Hugo's creative ideology. This contributes to a more comprehensive recognition of the significance of character portrayal in literary works and the social and cultural values they carry. "
