Abstract
At the intersection of literature and history, Shakespeare's drama, with its unique artistic charm and profound social insight, has become a valuable resource for exploring the relationship between power and gender. Since ancient times, power and gender have been the two indispensable elements in the social structure. They interact with each other to shape the style of human society together. However, during Shakespeare's British Renaissance, gender-power relations were particularly complex and contradictory. Women have a low status in the society, subject to strict norms and restrictions, while men hold most of the power and resources. This phenomenon of gender power inequality is fully displayed in Shakespeare's plays. This paper aims to explore the relationship between power and gender in Shakespeare's drama, and to reveal the gender politics and power dynamics hidden behind the drama through textual analysis and theoretical interpretation. The paper first summarizes the creation of the background and characteristics of Shakespeare's plays, and then analyzes the construction and ex pression of male characters and female characters in power relations respectively. Male characters show the complex and changeable appearance of power through the display of imperial and aristocratic power, the performance of gender and power, the alienation and the struggle of power and tragedy. Under the restriction of social norms, the female roles, however, strive for their status and rights and interests through resistance and power struggle, power remodeling and self-definition.
Key words: Shakespeare's drama; power relations; gender politics; social landscape
