Abstract


This article aims to explore the profound impact of the ancient imperial examination system on the life, fate, and psychological state of scholars through an in-depth analysis of the literary masterpiece "The Scholars" in the Qing Dynasty. The article first provides an overview of the research background, significance, purpose, methods, and current research status both domestically and internationally, laying the foundation for in-depth analysis. Subsequently, a brief introduction was given to the background of the work, the author's life, the main plot and character relationships, as well as the themes and ideological connotations contained in the work, providing background support for subsequent analysis. The core part of the article focuses on the multidimensional presentation of the imperial examination in "The Scholars". Firstly, the institutional regulations, historical evolution, and specific desc riptions of the imperial examination system in the works were reviewed, revealing the role of the imperial examination system in shaping the life trajectory of scholars. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis was conducted on the close relationship between the imperial examination and the fate of scholars, including the social status improvement brought about by success and the life difficulties after failure. At the same time, fraud and corruption in the imperial examination were exposed and criticized, and their causes and impacts were explored. In addition, from the perspective of the psychology of scholars, the profound influence of the imperial examination system on their utilitarian mentality, fame seeking psychology, moral dilemma, and spiritual struggle was analyzed. Subsequently, the article further showcases the lifestyle of scholars in "The Scholars", including their daily lives, social activities, spiritual world, cultural pursuits, as well as their conflicts and integration with social reality. Through the analysis of the diversity and complexity of the fate of scholars, it reveals their struggles and perseverance in facing fate choices, showcasing the unique style and survival wisdom of the scholar community. Finally, the article summarizes the comprehensive impact of the imperial examination on the life, destiny, and psychology of scholars, emphasizing the important value of "The Scholars" in reflecting the shortcomings of the imperial examination system and revealing the living conditions of scholars, providing rich textual materials and profound analytical perspectives for understanding the ancient social structure and mentality of scholars.
