Abstract
"Red Sorghum" is a representative work of the famous Chinese writer Mo Yan. Through telling the love story of Jiu'er and Yu Zhan'ao, as well as their struggles in the context of the Anti Japanese War, it deeply reflects the ethics, emotions, and historical culture of rural society. The inspiration for the creation of this book comes from the author's hometown of Gaomi and the real historical events of that era. Through delicate brushstrokes, it showcases the local life and people's spiritual outlook of that special period. In "Red Sorghum", the portrayal of female characters is particularly outstanding. The female protagonist Jiu'er, with her distinct personality and resilient spirit, becomes the core of the story, while other female characters, such as the resilient and wise female farmer, the brave female warrior, and the gentle and strong mother, together construct a rich and colorful group portrait of women, showcasing their multiple roles and strengths in rural society. The novel also deeply showcases local culture, from depicting real local life to reflecting the spirit of local resistance, and then to clan concepts and rich and colorful folk customs, all of which allow readers to feel the profound cultural heritage. In modern society, "Red Sorghum" still has extremely high literary value. Its rich character portrayal, unique storyline, profound social and historical reflection, as well as unique local culture and language style, all make this work a classic and continue to resonate and reflect with readers.
