Abstract
Zhang Ailing, an important female writer in the history of modern Chinese literature, is renowned for her unique writing style and profound insight into human nature. Her works focus more on the fate of women and social reality, and are deeply loved by readers. The Golden Lock occupies an important position in Zhang Ailing's creative career and is also a classic work of modern Chinese literature. This work has won widespread praise and recognition for its exquisite narrative techniques, vivid character portrayal, and profound social implications. Cao Qiqiao is the protagonist in the novel, a woman with a complex personality and unfortunate fate. Her upbringing and family environment have shaped her unique personality and also determined her tragic fate. Marriage was a disaster for her, causing her to lose herself under feudal constraints. However, in the predicament, Cao Qiqiao also demonstrated a dual nature of resistance and compromise. Her image not only represents the fate of many women in society at that time, but also symbolizes women's desire for freedom and happiness. In addition to Cao Qiqiao, there are many other female characters in the novel who each bear the pain and struggle brought about by feudal constraints. The image of Jiang and her mother-in-law is in stark contrast. The former lost herself under the oppression of feudal ethics, while the latter became a loyal defender of feudal ethics. The destinies of these female characters are intertwined, together forming a group image of women under feudal constraints. Among these women, there are also some who have begun to awaken their female consciousness, questioning the rationality of feudal ethics and pursuing their own happiness and freedom.
