Abstract

The study on the image and cultural connotations of recluses in ancient literature focuses on the unique recluse phenomenon in traditional Chinese culture. By systematically examining relevant texts from the pre-Qin to the Ming and Qing periods, this research aims to thoroughly analyze the evolution of the recluse image and its underlying cultural implications. Employing a method that combines close reading of texts with historical context analysis, representative works such as the "Zhuangzi," "Shi Shuo Xin Yu," and "Tao Yuanming Ji" are selected as ob jects of study to explore the characteristics and social functions of recluse images across different periods. The findings reveal that the image of the recluse underwent a transformation from early natural seclusion influenced by Daoist thought to a symbol of personal independence during the Wei and Jin dynasties, and subsequently to a synthesis of Confucian engagement and Daoist withdrawal in the Tang and Song periods and beyond. This evolution reflects the value orientations and spiritual pursuits of ancient Chinese intellectuals at different historical stages. Innovatively situating the recluse image within specific historical and cultural contexts, this study uncovers its significance as an essential component of the ideal personality construction for literati, highlighting its unique status in the transmission and development of traditional Chinese culture. Through comparative analysis of the similarities and differences in recluse images across various periods, the intrinsic connections between reclusive culture and traditional Chinese philosophy and aesthetics are further elucidated, providing new perspectives for understanding the spiritual world of ancient Chinese literati. The research not only enriches the study of character images in ancient literature but also offers valuable historical insights for contemporary cultural development.
