Abstract
In the biography of Hulan River, economic poverty and low social status are the two core factors that profoundly affect the fate of rural women. This work depicts the life scene of an ordinary village on the banks of the Hulan River with delicate brushstrokes, among which the survival status of rural women is particularly worrying. Economic poverty is like an invisible web, tightly constraining the lives of rural women. In that era, agricultural production was the main source of income for most households, and women often struggled to dominate agricultural production due to limitations in physical strength, education level, and traditional beliefs. Therefore, their economic sources are extremely limited and mostly rely on male members in the family. When families encounter natural disasters, diseases, or other accidents, economic pressure increases sharply, and women often become the first group to be affected and sacrificed. They not only have to endure the hardships of life, but also face various difficulties caused by economic poverty, such as food shortages and poor medical conditions. At the same time, the low social status further exacerbates the situation for rural women. In feudal traditional beliefs, women were seen as appendages to men, and their value was often limited within the family, such as managing household chores, having children, and so on. This concept has led to the marginalization of rural women in society, as they lack opportunities and rights to participate in public affairs, making it even more difficult for them to gain recognition and respect from society. Therefore, when facing injustice and oppression, they often choose to remain silent and endure, making it difficult for them to change their fate through their own efforts. Economic poverty and low social status are important factors influencing the fate of rural women in "The Story of Hulan River". These factors interact and constrain each other, together forming a huge obstacle to the survival and development of rural women.
