Abstract
Genetic diversity is the sum of genetic variations within a biological population, which come from natural processes such as gene mutations, recombination, and gene flow. Genetic diversity is crucial for the adaptability and evolution of species. It not only provides a foundation for species to cope with environmental changes, but also provides abundant genetic resources for humans. The genetic diversity of crops plays an important role in breeding. By utilizing these genetic variations, new varieties with high yield, high quality, and strong stress resistance can be cultivated to meet human needs for food and agricultural production. However, the genetic diversity of crops faces many challenges in breeding applications. Firstly, the loss of genetic resources is a serious problem, as long-term single variety cultivation and high-yield agricultural models have led to the disappearance of many crop varieties with unique genetic characteristics. Secondly, the protection of genetic diversity is difficult, requiring a significant investment of manpower and resources, and facing challenges in protection and management. In addition, breeding methods also have limitations. Traditional breeding cycles are long and inefficient, while modern biotechnology provides new means, but the technical difficulty and cost are high. Finally, the mismatch between market demand and breeding ob jectives is also a problem that needs to be addressed. To address these challenges, a series of strategies need to be adopted.
