Abstract
As one of Hemingway's representative works, The Old Man and the Sea profoundly reveals the complexity of human nature and the dilemma of survival with its unique naturalistic style. This study aims to comprehensively explore the characteristics of this work in terms of content, characters, artistic features, naturalistic ex pression, and its underlying themes and inspirations. "The Old Man and the Sea" tells the story of an old fisherman named Santiago who, after 84 consecutive days without catching any fish, finally caught a huge marlin. However, on his way back, he was attacked by a shark and only brought back a set of fish bones. The work employs concise and lively language, vividly depicting the struggle between humans and nature, as well as between humans and fate, through dialogue and inner monologues. Meanwhile, Hemingway's "iceberg theory" is also fully reflected in this work. In The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway employs naturalistic techniques to deeply describe the environment, characters, and plot. The desc ription of the environment highlights the vastness and mystery of the sea, while the portrayal of characters reveals the truth and complexity of human nature. The plot arrangement follows the principles of naturalism, emphasizing the interweaving of contingency and inevitability. This study further explores the relationship between naturalism and existentialism, as well as themes such as hope and despair, and the impermanence of fate from a naturalistic perspective. Through in-depth analysis, we found that these themes are intertwined in the work and together constitute the core idea of the work. The naturalism in The Old Man and the Sea not only provides new creative techniques and perspectives for modern literature, but also profoundly reveals the complexity of human nature and the dilemma of survival. This work also inspires us to re-examine the relationship between humans and nature, and to think about how to protect our planet's home. At the same time, the work also has important implications for readers and society, encouraging us to remain resilient and courageous in the face of difficulties, and to pursue inner truth and freedom.
