Abstract
Journey to the West, as one of the Four Great Classical Novels in ancient China, was written by Ming Dynasty writer Wu Chengen. Its creative background was deeply influenced by multiple factors such as society, culture, and religion at that time. The work revolves around the journey of Tang Monk, his master, and his disciples in the West seeking sc riptures. Through rich mythological imagery, it showcases the brilliance and darkness of human nature, as well as the complexity and contradictions of society. In Journey to the West, the presentation of mythological imagery is particularly prominent. Mythical creatures such as dragons, phoenixes, and qilin, as well as mythological characters such as Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Monk, not only have vivid images and distinct personalities, but also carry rich cultural connotations and symbolic meanings. The construction of these mythological images not only showcases the richness of ancient mythology, but also reflects the author's profound insight into human nature and society. From the perspective of literary value, mythological imagery plays an important role in Journey to the West. They not only inherit and promote national culture, expand the imaginative space of literary creation, but also deepen the symbolic significance of literary works and enrich the aesthetic experience of readers. At the same time, these mythological images also reflect the values of ancient Chinese society, such as loyalty, bravery, wisdom, etc., providing valuable spiritual wealth for future generations. In terms of cultural significance, mythological imagery constructs a magical and unique artistic world in Journey to the West, promoting communication and integration between different cultures. This work is not only a treasure of ancient Chinese literature, but also a brilliant gem in the world's literary treasure trove.
