Assessment of the Impacts of Genetically Modified Crops on Ecosystems

Abstract

The widespread application of genetically modified (GM) crops has triggered extensive attention regarding their ecological impacts. This study aims to systematically evaluate the effects of GM crops on ecosystems and their potential risks. With the increasing global population and rising food demand, GM technology is regarded as a crucial approach to enhancing agricultural productivity; however, the long-term impacts on biodiversity and non-target organisms remain unclear. To address this, an interdisciplinary methodology was employed, integrating field experiments, laboratory analyses, and model simulations, to comprehensively assess various types of GM crops, such as insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant varieties. Typical ecosystems were selected as research subjects, and key indicators including soil microbial community structure, insect population dynamics, and food web stability were analyzed by comparing regions cultivating GM crops with those growing conventional crops. The results indicate that certain GM crops have no significant negative effects on ecosystem functions in the short term but may alter soil microbial compositions and affect the survival of non-target insects under specific conditions. Additionally, gene flow was found to potentially enhance weed resistance, posing challenges to agricultural management. A novel contribution of this study lies in its incorporation of temporal scales and spatial heterogeneity into an integrated assessment fr amework, along with the proposal of an ecological threshold-based risk warning mechanism. These findings not only provide scientific evidence for the safe application of GM crops but also offer critical references for policy formulation and sustainable agricultural development.
