Abstract
As a classic in American literature, The Catcher in the Rye has attracted the attention of countless scholars and readers with its unique narrative style and profound characterization since its publication in 1951. The hero Holden Caulfield, a seemingly cynical and rebellious teenager, is actually full of the desire for the pure world and the deep disgust for the hypocrisy of the adult world. His image not only reflects the general psychological state of American teenagers in the middle of the 20th century, but also touches on education, family, society and other profound problems. This paper aims to analyze the characters of Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye, discuss the basic characteristics of rebellion and resistance, innocence and kindness, contradiction and struggle, and further explore the social and educational factors behind these characteristics. The article first outlines Holden's rebellious behavior and the roots of his rebellious spirit, showing his profound criticism of the hypocrisy and hypocrisy of the adult world. Then, through the analysis of Holden's pure ideal and good quality, it reveals his deep yearning and pursuit for a better world.
